The Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) is a global multi-stakeholder initiative, which aims at enhancing responsible and sustainable fisheries through transparency and participation.
Transparency: The FiTI will increase transparency by regularly publishing information regarding ‘access to marine fisheries’. This includes, inter alia, who has the right to fish (e.g. rights holders, vessels, license agreements), how much is paid for the right to fish, and how much fish is extracted. The information will cover large-scale fisheries as well as small-scale fisheries.
Participation : The FiTI will enhance the credibility of the provided information through a deliberative process, which involves all major stakeholder groups (i.e. government, companies, civil society). Over time, this approach will help establish a trust-based, consensus-oriented multi-stakeholder environment for collective action.
Increased transparency and multi-stakeholder participation provide a credible basis for national debate. They also create positive competition amongst countries and companies to enhance responsible fisheries.
The one-day international conference will gather approximately 300 representatives of governments, businesses, civil society from the four corners of the world. All gathered to launch a new era of transparency in the world’s fisheries. Indeed, this 2nd International Conference of the FiTI will be a milestone for the initiative, marking the beginning of the implementation of the FiTI in the first five pilot countries, which have already been laying the grounds for FiTI in their respective countries: Guinea, Indonesia, Mauritania, Senegal and the Seychelles.
The Conference will be used to officially adopt the framework which will govern the process of the initiative in all FiTI implementing countries throughout the world: the Global FiTI Standard. After one and a half year of collaboration, international fisheries and governance experts have now finalized this global framework which builds on and support existing initiatives that seek to enhance fisheries sustainability.
In the light of the approaching high-level UN Conference to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development), the 2nd International Conference of the FiTI will also be used to highlight a key message: that enhancing transparency and participation in this sector that remains an important source of livelihood for coastal countries all around the world is crucial to the implementation of SDG14.
The Conference will be the occasion for further potential FiTI countries to exchange lessons learned with the five FiTI pilotes, and for their representatives to commit, too, to implement the initiative in their countries.
Sharing information, good practices, experiences and lessons learned, including, as appropriate, as these relate to science, planning, policies and implementation in relation to adaptation actions;
Finally, participants to the Conference will contribute to establish the 1st International Board of the FiTI, hence contributing to launch the FiTI as a stand-alone initiative with an official governance structure.
“Indonesia has been a leader in the establishment of the FiTI and we are very proud to host this important event next year here in Indonesia.” Mr. Aryo Hanggono, representative of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia.
Amongs others, The Conference will:
Expected results:
This workshop will bring together a varied panel of fisheries experts to discuss how transparency has been recognised as an essential issue in fisheries reform efforts. The event will allow for extensive discussion among panelists and participants, and will consider how the FiTI can compliment other regional and international initiatives, such as the Voluntary Guidelines on Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries, the Voluntary Guidelines on Tenure, and (appropriately) the Bali Guidelines on Access to Information, Participation and Access to Justice on Environmental Matters.
